Supervisor fabiosun Posted January 12, 2023 Supervisor Share Posted January 12, 2023 (edited) After a few years where I enjoyed and used my ThreadRipper with immense satisfaction, I made the decision to venture into another project. This time taking advantage of the tremendous work done by @CaseySJand other users, I will struggle much less to get my PC working than we suffered three years ago for TRX40 Motherboard: https://rog.asus.com/it/motherboards/rog-crosshair/rog-crosshair-x670e-hero-model/ CPU: AMD Ryzen 7950X https://www.amd.com/en/direct-buy/5676499200/it 128 Gb DDR5: 2kit of Kingston Fury Beast DDR5 RGB 64GB (2x32GB) 5200MT/s DDR5 CL40 DIMM https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B0B1QNPM2T/ I will keep the CPU heatsink and some of the disks that I have now This system loses in multicore to my TRX40 but performs better in other areas I hope to see you still developing our historical thread on the TRX40, I certainly will a touched TrexIntosh 🙂 🙂 SysReport.zip EFI_ASUS_ROG_x670E_HERO_Clover5149.zip EFI_ASUS_ROG_X670E_HERO_-096-OCLP-broadcom.zip EFI_ASUS_ROG_x670E_HERO_OC_098.zip Edited February 8 by fabiosun added EFI_ASUS_ROG_x670E_HERO_OC_098 5 1

Jaidy
I use an external dac, though I am guessing the audio issues have been resolved at this point?

On AM5 platform? yes it works perfectly (USB /HDMI(DP or also with audio which needs applealc) My motherboard has (as thread ripper motherboard) Realtek USB2.0 audio It is improved because I can boot with speaker inserted and I have working audio while thread ripper has this problem

I haven’t visited the thread in a while so I’m guessing those issues were resolved. Thanks for confirming. I am debating if I should wait for Threadripper later this year (if at all) or get this system..

I am pretty happy for now in task I use like davinci is often faster than thread ripper about 20% only 128 gb is possible but it is enough half the cores of a 3970x

I work with huge matrices so need a large amount of RAM. 128GB would not cut it, I need at least 220GB. If 64GB dimms appear in the future, then certainly this would be the way to go. Number of cores I actually do not need 32 cores at all, so 16 cores would be more than enough. That reminds me, the incremental updates issue has been resolved using the boot argument, right? Supervisor fabiosun Posted January 24, 2023 Author Supervisor Share Posted January 24, 2023 what works 1) thunderbolt 4 (Maple Ridge chip)* 2) internal RealTek 2.0 audio (as the thread ripper but without thread ripper detection problem) 3) hdmi/DP audio 4) all usb internal and motherboard 3 USB 2 header, 2 USB3 header (ASMedia) 5) All 4 NVME slots 6) intel i225 Ethernet 7) All 6 sata ports (two different controllers one is ASMedia) 8] sata hotplug 9) sleep/wake 10) Continuity Cam * *NOT Hot Plug for now what doesn't workin my specific case all Sata disks are seen as external and at the moment it was not possible to have them internal with kext or settings for Device properties that I tried Solved it was an incompatibility with Ventura OS device enumeration The system is as stable as the previous one I had Temperatures in full load are higher, in idle or medium load much but much lower In Ventura my Pioneer Blu ray disk recorder is not seen by OSX solved with a os update, in Monterey it works is it worth it? for me yes in full load I lose, compared to a TRX 3970x, about 15 %. In tasks that do not involve using all cores I gain even 20% With Davinci Resolve, using the test benchmark (candle). With trx40 I had for: 66 nodes 30/31 fps 6 TRN nodes 40/41 With AM5 I now have: 66 nodes 31/32 fps 6 TRN nodes 48/49 In general use I don't see much difference with my previous platform, lower watts and temperatures (not in full load)The bios is still very immature (0922 bios is a good improvement) but, if I hadn't made mistakes in assembly the system would have been up in an hour I would not spend too much on expensive DDR5s at very high frequencies since from AMD specs if you fill all 4 slots the maximum frequency is 3600! With latest Bios 0925/1003 is it possible to push 4 Dimm to 4800 without problems *https://github.com/acidanthera/FeatureUnlock/actions/runs/4398382993 1

Supervisor fabiosun Posted January 27, 2023 Author Supervisor Share Posted January 27, 2023 7000 series is well known to work in full load at is TJ temperatures and AMD says it is normal Asus and others motherboard manufacturers have added in their bios some useful options For Asus in advanced section is possible to enable PBO enhancement and the thermal limit option Here is possible to set three temperatures 70°,80°,90° In this way is possible to achieve great results in benchmarks without touching 95° for our CPUs

Supervisor fabiosun Posted February 27, 2023 Author Supervisor Share Posted February 27, 2023 (edited) With this new BIOS from ASUS, I did some test to push a bit my DDR5 to override the strict value imposed by AMD for the 4 dimm configuration that is mandatory at a frequency of 3600 Mhz Without making advanced modifications (i.e. dimm voltage or the like) by just changing the value in Mhz of the DIMMs from auto to 4400 the system starts and runs smoothly without problems (reverted to 3600 Mhz because different problems happen) Small improvements in the various benchmarks Edited March 3, 2023 by fabiosun
