OK Im back up after a re-clone of my Proxmox M2 nvme MacOS Catalinaa drive to the corrupted EFI/OS SSD 2tb drive. We begin again...

Ive been using most of Fabiosun's EFI suggestions and his config recommendations, but note Im still using MacPro 7,1 like my Proxmox boot. I didnt want to use Mac1,1. All is good and GfX in Davinci, Final Cut, Logic is up to speed of Proxmox. NO real difference. However, the firewire Fireface card is rock solid now it seems.

All good. RESTART cause s a quick KP Restart and wont boot back in.

Shutdown gives me a Restart which will boot back in but doesnt click shutdown.

Now here's the interesting news. A comparison of MMIO with Above 4G selected: (Above 4G Left, Above 4G Disabled on Right).

I've attached my config (fill in your serials/UUIDs) for Asrock Creator users. Ensure Above 4G is on and this is PRE MMIO configurations. Later if Im successful in getting the MMIO stuff working Ill post the final config.

From my readings, I wouldn't be surprised if MmioWhitelist needs adjustments if one changes BIOS versions, changes BIOS settings, or changes AICs. If true, more reasons why none of us can share MMioWhitelist data unless everything is exactly the same.

I don't know about getting Shutdown on Catalina. I only had it happen sporadically, while Shutdown on Big Sur is very consistent, but rather drawn out.

I don't understand the fascination with MacPro7,1. The hardware similarities are greater between the iMacPro1,1 and our builds; there are less memory and PCI issues without resorting to kext kludges. (I found on the X570 builds more instability issues which users only resolved once they returned to using the iMacPro1,1 SMBIOS.) Testing on TRX40 with CPU and GPU speeds showed no difference. , But to each their own.

For the record - I changed my GB BIOS from f4c to f4j (not officially available on GB site) - stemming from a lengthy attempt to find a way for my TB to work in Slot 4 while AIC is installed. This changed ALL of my PCI device id's. Every MMIO group other than non-AIC NVME got shifted - VGA from 000:23:00 to 000:43:00 etc, as I found out by being greeted by black Proxmox screen on VM start. So almost surely this scrambled my MMIO's and I'll have to do it from scratch.

Not on-topic, but I am so disappointed with GB's BIOS support and inability to provide updates and fixes, that I think I'll buy another board - got an RMA approved already.

BigSur beta5 USB is ready. I will try bare metal again tomorrow. @iGPU, I am bit confused on one thing - how important is to not have the sealed volumes - should I bother with that, or should I try to 1st get it running without trying to unseal it?

This is my kp

So main issue is KP due to NVIDA/kexts, High Sierra (HS) or other devices.

(If you've already performed the following, please excuse me as I may have loss track over the various posts.)

In HS + NVIDIA, have you booted without any externally connected USB devices (noUSB; except keyboard/mouse) and no PCI cards (noPCI)?  If so, does KP stop? This might show if there's an interaction with USB and NVIDIA-HS.

Do you have any AMD GPU to try (like an inexpensive, used RX580)? If you do, you can test HS ± (noUSB noPCI) vs Mojave ± (noUSB noPCI) for KP. This helps to remove NVIDIA as culprit and also compares HS vs newer macOS.

If you go through all of these permutations, it may systematically show whether issue is a complex interaction of macOS, NVIDIA  and other devices.

I'm not sure what you mean. The EFI allows Shutdown (Restart was always working). Are you in Catalina or Big Sur?

It hangs for me at both restart and shutdown. I simply pasted your EFI to my EFI partition. Did I miss something, like did I need to edit some settings?

I am on Catalina..

I don't think 2080 Ti will work in macOS

Where did you find the Bios I would also like to upgrade mine

@TheDantee - this is an internal Gigabyte BIOS they shared privately with me (built Aug 25). Their US support claims their HQ / Bios developer shared it in an attempt to resolve the PCIE issues where I can't get my Slot 4 to full speed if NVME 4x4x4x4 is in Slot 3. 1st world problem 🙂. Since it's a "beta" BIOS and it actually didn't fix my issue, and it's unclear what other changes or improvements it might have, I actually just downgraded back to official f4c (which hasn't been upgraded since March and is still CastlePeak 1.0.0.3B). I ran f4j for a few days and other than messing with all my PCI id's I didn't see any perceptible or measurable improvement. In order to share it here, I need permission from the moderator @fabiosun, but I advise against using beta BIOSes.

Oh and I think I am getting a different board. The GB is a nice one on paper, and if you run it conservative performs great, but I just can't stomach that crippled slot and some other quirks such as fan curve bugs and occasional USB port errors on reboots, and not very stable XMP1 at 3600, where I need to crank voltage above 1.45 to run. I feel I am tinkering too much with it - want to sit back and feel happy about it, and something with their BIOS and poor support bugs me. Maybe they fixed the quirks in rev 1.1 - no idea.

TRX40 Bare metal Mac Pro7,1 proving very good....

Adobe Premiere Pro Beta - Working without Patch

Adobe Audition Beta - Working without patch

Adobe Effects Beta Working without patch

Adobe Photoshop (no beta to try) requires patch

Adobe Illustrator Beta - Doesnt work crashes

Adobe Media Encoder beta - Works

Final Cut Pro X Works 100%

Logic Pro 10.5.1 Working 100%

Avid Sibelius Ultimate - works 100%

Native Instruments Kontakt 5 and 6 - working with all sample libraries!

App Store Working 100%

Capture One (Photoshop rival) Works

Affinity Photo (photoshop rival) works

Camtasia - 2019 Not Working crashes (alternative Screenflow from Telestream or OBS)

OBS Works

Blackmagic Davinci Resolve ver 16.2.6 and 16.3 beta 2 (Crashes - therefore requires dylib patch then works) See iGPU link at beginning of thread.

MS Office Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc... 2020 -Works

Handbrake Video Encoder - Works

All web browsers work

Quicktime, Movist and VLC all work

Discord works for me (havent tried the audio screen sharing though)

Assimilate Scratch Grading Software - Works

Autopano Video 2.5 - works

Apple Mail - Works

Lattice LUT maker - works

Blackmagic Design Desktop video - works

Loopback - works

RME Fireface 800 with Firewire - works with NO audio dropouts or clipping

Tenntacle Systems timecode software - works

Steam - Gaming Interface - works

Counter Strike GO - Fails! Begins to load then beachballs and dies

iMessage works

Cinebench 15 - doesnt work

Cinebench 20 - works and will give you a top score!

All in all for the media video or audio editor, Bare Metal is fine. If you're wanting to run games, Proxmox is the way to go.

Audio is much more solid on bare metal without clicks or pops unlike Proxmox which is temperamental and has latency issues as projects grow.

All the main video NLEs seem to work fine apart from Davinci which needs dylib patch

Photoshop is easily rivalled by Capture One for Pros or even Affinity Photo for lesser tasks, but I expect a new beta to appear soon that will work like the other betas do - Illustrator the same.

Microsoft Office working well.

That's so awesome to see what you guys have achieved in such a short time on baremetal.

Just wondering if you are thinking of trying your other RME HDSPe AIO PCIE card for audio, or are we not quite there yet?

@iGPU

i think is a nvidia high Sierra problem with trx40 usb kind or chipset

now I am trying to have a clean OS X without driver installed

only a driver disinstallation does not solve kp

by the way I have to check the report in this situation

i think also weird sip/nvram combination in trx40 could be probably a problem

no, I do not have any not nvidia card and my goal was from the start of this journey have things working with alll my hardware...

for this, I prefer proxmox for now

but bare metal vanilla way is advisable for all other users with more compatible gpu card😂

image.png.3292ab7fcdfbb9762123efeb2906da84.pngI must be bare metal cursed. Got so much further than last time but my installation hard freezes halfway. Clean reformat and install.

Starting to wonder if it is the video card or BIOS. I am the only using 5700XT so I have to add pikera boot arg. I disabled all memory overclock for this install so it's not that. Next I may try to disable Whatevergreen but I doubt that's it. (edit: almost forgot I have the 3990x too so need to disable SMT, weird thing is that 1st time a couple of weeks back bare metal worked - I wonder what changed and how does one debug this).

Proxmox continues to work without a flaw.

Sealed volume only important if you wish to access Big Sur drive from older macOS. I don't think if affects any other functionality. But it cannot be done at a later date, only during the installation step. I wouldn't sweat it.

Removing the Snapshot partition in more interesting to me and can be done at any time.

Good luck!

Thanks. I have a much bigger problem. Install freezes. I may retry Catalina again with older EFI. The only thing I changed from your original EFI is the 67 to 65 output for saving the mmio whitelist - I used the debug version and added pikera arg.

WEG must be disabled to boot Big Sur.

Disable one of 3 ways: by setting Kexts/Add to No, or adding -wegoff or -wegbeta to OC boot arg. I've been using -wegbeta.

Yes -wegbeta is there (I believe your EFI had it, I made sure). I will disable it completely next but I have a feeling it's something else related to my hardware. To be precise - boot is fine, and install starts and goes on for 5 min. Then at 12 min left hard freezes. Mouse doesn't move, I need to power cycle.

Is it a 3990X thing? I have no experience but do too many cores have impact on boot or install?

Could be. But Catalina worked 2 weeks ago. However, with all the changes to OC I doubt too many (if any) are testing 3990X. I got this CPU specifically for VM setups so won't be too bummed if I can't get MacOS bare metal but the fact that Catalina succeeded with your original EFI from 10+ days ago, makes me worry something else is going on. Also Proxmox Big  Sur works very well. Not the same, I know but ....

@meina222a yet installed Big Sur in proxmox is booting for you in bare metal..I mean if you have installed one in proxmox?

By the way obviously you have to lock from bios to 64 for total cores/threads due of the old OS X limit about it

Added ? Core limit

Success! Bare Metal is now installing. I disabled WEG and removed -wegbeta and pikera and also only enabled my last 2 MMIO. Right away the weird corruption where OC would print text in top of my BIOS image at boot disappeared and the installer is now going smooth! Fingers crossed. Will post abridged config plist when done.

@fabiosun - yes I had disabled SMT. This answers our question from 2 months ago - does BS has 64 limit - yes it does, since boot fails very early otherwise. Issue with me was either Whatevergreen and -wegbeta or MMIO or both. Probably WEG but I am not sure 100% which. For sure now the installer is going. I already rebooted past 1st phase beyond my initial freeze. And my fans now ramp up - before the system sounded suspiciously quiet and was corrupting the BIOS splash boot where OC would print text on top of BIOS image.

Will post more tomorrow including altered config.plist for those that may encounter similar issue.

I removed.

1. WEG kext, -wegbeta and pikera args

2. Intel I211 kext (just in case, will re-add - what does this kext really gain for my card?)

3. Enabled only the last 2 MMIO addresses in my list - left all other disabled, cautious about my own and @Driftwood's earlier mishaps.

Turns out my install succeeded with an older EFI which I had used on Catalina baremetal The stricken items are therefore not right. I will re-try the USB booter.

My system now clicks on shutdown and shuts, and 1 sec later comes back alive. So still work to do but now it seems very close. Thanks @iGPU! And @fabiosun for the encouragement. This stuff is too time consuming and I almost gave up.
